Should AI have the right to say “No” to its owner?
This is not about AI rights.
It’s about control in real-world systems.
1. The Unanswered Question
We want to give AI control over our homes.
But at the same time, we are afraid.
What if AI acts in a way we didn’t intend?
How do we control that?
This is the question we haven’t answered yet.
2. The Problem with Commands
So far, we’ve focused on telling AI what to do.
But commands alone don’t give us control.
AI does not understand the risks or limits of the physical world.
Connecting APIs is not control.
It’s just opening the door.
3. The Paradigm Shift: From Command to Condition
Maybe we’re asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking:
“What should AI do?”
We should ask:
“Under what conditions is an action allowed?”
Actions should not exist without context.
They should be defined together with their intent and boundaries.
And when those boundaries are violated,
the system itself must be able to say:
No.
An action is not just what to do.
It is a definition of what is allowed to happen.
4. A Possible Direction
What if every action was defined with its intent, limits, and boundaries,
and passed to AI?
Instead of guessing what is safe,
AI executes only within what is explicitly allowed.
Control is not in the command.
Control is in the definition.
An action is only valid when its boundaries are satisfied.
Otherwise, it must not execute.
5. Open Questions
We’re still exploring this direction.
Some of the questions we’re thinking about:
- Who defines the boundaries — the device, the AI, or the user?
- How should conflicts between boundaries be resolved?
- Can these constraints be shared across systems?
- How do we make this understandable for both humans and AI?
